E/671 The histogram shows the reduced chi^2 values for 20 off-source regions tested for 200s timescale variability and binned into Delta chi^2 nu = 0.2. The dotted line indicates the distribution expected for a non-varying background rate.

E/999 (a) Distribution of the residuals obtained for the elliptical and SO galaxy sample after subtracting the best fit log l_x = 1.64 log l_B - 25.4. (b) Same as (a) but using log l_x = 1.08 ell_B - 9.2.
E/1000 Same as E/997. The lines represent the different models considered: Dashed line: best fit l_x ~alpha ~l_B^{1.64}; solid line: l_x ~alpha ~l_B^2 (Hot coronae); dot-dashed line: individual sources; dotted lines: White and Chevalier (1984) model for T > 1 x 10^6 K and T > 2 x 10^6 K.
E/1001 The monochromatic X-ray luminosity is plotted against the optical luminosity for normal elliptical and S0 galaxies (this sample, x) and the 3CR galaxies (Fabbiano et al. 1984). The V band magnitudes have been used for consistency with the data for 3CR galaxies.
E/1002 The monochromatic X-ray luminosity of 3CR quasars and 3CR galaxies plotted as a function of optical luminosity. Dashed line represents the best fit to the 3CR quasar data. The solid lines represent how this best fit is modified when the effect of the whole galaxy is considered for three different optical luminosities.
E/1003 A 1367. Optical picture of the cluster contains several hundred individual galaxies, the brightest of which are seen as the extended or fuzzy dark spots.
E/1004 X-ray contour map of M51 and its companion (NGC~5195) superposed on the optical image from the Hubble Atlas of Galaxies (Sandage 1961). The x-ray data have been smoothed with a gaussian with sigma = 24". The first contour is 2 sigma above field background; 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 \sigma's are then plotted.
E/1005 a) X-ray contour map smoothed with a gaussian with sigma = 5". The first contour is 2 sigma above the field background. Successive contours are plotted at steps of 1 sigma over the previous one. Note that due to the smaller smoothing function, NGC~5195 is less significant than in E/1004 which suggests that the source is extended. A, B and C identify the sources of Table 1. b) H alpha photograph from Carranza, Crillon, and Monnet (1969, plate 1) on the same scale as a); c) High resolution radio continuum 21~cm map (adapted from Figure~4 in Segalovitz (1977)). The radio contours that stress the arm component are superposed on a blue photograph of M51. The scale is the same as a).
E/1006 The radial distribution of x-ray photons in the nuclear region of M51 (histogram) compared to the HRI point spread function (solid line).
E/1007 a) X-ray (crosses) and optical blue (solid line) surface brightness profiles plotted as a function of radius. Azimuthal symmetry has been assumed. The relative normalization of the two curves is arbitrary; b) X-ray (f_x) over optical (f_B) flux ratio as a function of distance from the center of M51. The dashed line represents the average f_x/f_B for a radius > 100''.
E/1008 Comparison between the x-ray, H alpha, blue light (disk and arms), far-infrared, neutral hydrogen, molecular hydrogen (derived from CO) and 21~cm radio continuum surface brightness profiles. The x-ray points are plotted on a composite of Figure~6 from Scoville and Young (1983). The x-ray data points have been corrected for the inclination of M51 (i = 20 deg) as in Scoville and Young (1983). X-ray points for R < 2~kpc are not plotted because off scale. All curves have been arbitrarily normalized.
